Cactus Family

Cacti are members of the Cactaceae family – boasting thousands of species that have made their way into people’s homes one way or another. The most popular Cacti houseplants are categorized into two distinct groups – desert cacti and forest cacti. The former are the spiky ones that Wile E Coyote has a love-hate relationship with, while the latter are ones that grow in rain forests and look quite different than their usually spikey aplomb (i.e., Christmas Cactus). Desert Cacti are the toughest of houseplants – like cockroaches, they’d probably survive nuclear doom – but let’s not find out. Unusual, unique and elegant, you’ll encounter cacti of all shapes and sizes, and they make for lovely housewarming gifts for the novice plant daddy/mommy in the making.

Beautiful plants, inconsistent service

I went into the (new) Chive plant store a couple weeks ago and put a sharkfin cactus on hold, the service was great, the person who greeted me and offered to help was the manager/owner (I think). She offered to put the plant on hold for a few days as I was planning to purchase it after the weekend - before my flight home to Vancouver. When I went in to purchase the plant on Monday afternoon, there were 2 employees in the store, one seemed very new, I asked her questions about other plants but she wasn't able to answer, which was fine. She was very polite about it and helped me complete my purchase of the plant that was on hold. However, the other employee who seemed more senior, was very unpleasant, rude and discounted my request to wrap the plant appropriately for my flight. She made it seem like I knew nothing about plants or transporting them even though I've grown and shipped hundreds of plants all across Canada. Eventually I just asked her to leave the plant as is, in a brown paper bag and I would figure it out on my own and left the store. She seemed to have the same arrogant attitude toward the newer employee unfortunately.
